Taking Pet-Friendly to Another Level

At Rondekuil, we’ve always welcomed guests who want to bring their beloved cats and dogs along on holiday. But every now and then, we get the privilege of hosting some truly special animal visitors who remind us just how unique a pet-friendly accommodation destination can be.

Stars of the Show

Thanks to our proximity to Cape Town’s major showgrounds, we often see magnificent animals travelling from far and wide to participate in national dog shows, workshops, and other events. Some of the country’s top breeds have strutted their stuff here at Rondekuil — and perhaps in a future blog, we’ll showcase a few of these spectacular four-legged celebrities.

Renate and Her Remarkable Passengers

But it’s not just the usual furry guests who check in with us. Renate from Fleetfoot Pet Transport is a regular overnight visitor on her monthly round trip from Johannesburg. Her specially customised van carries an astonishing variety of passengers: chickens, ducks, swans, tortoises, donkeys, goats — and more recently, even a miniature horse or two.

By happy chance, our Rondawel was available on her last stopover, which meant that a skittish little Shetland pony could disembark and stretch her legs. Our lawn, freshly cut and emerald green after a soaking winter rain, offered irresistible grazing and plenty of space to romp about and burn off some energy before settling in for the night. We were slightly anxious about coaxing her back into her crate — visions of five people pushing and shoving came to mind — but to our relief, she was perfectly agreeable and quite content to settle into her stall for the next leg of her journey.

Adding to the entertainment, Renate’s beloved cat Aura, a seasoned traveller who criss-crosses the country with her, amused herself on the long road by hopping onto the poor pony’s back — much to the pony’s patient resignation!

A Stubborn Suitor

The Shetland was bought as part of a breeding pair, so a month later we eagerly awaited the arrival of her hubby-to-be . To our surprise, he wasn’t nearly as cooperative. Quite hilariously, he refused to leave his crate altogether, turning down every offer of a stretch and a grassy snack. Fortunately, his enclosure was spacious enough to keep him comfortable all the way home. No doubt we’ll be seeing the happy couple’s adorable offspring at Rondekuil before long — just one more reason we love taking pet-friendly to another level!
